The post-mining excavation "Piaseczno" is located in the south-eastern part of Poland, on the left bank of the Vistula River. After the extraction of sulfur and later sands in 1981, the pit remains in an unliquidated state. Its area is 167 ha, and the depth reaches 46.0 m.
During the process of self-flooding of the excavation with water flowing in from the Neogene and Quaternary aquiferous, water level reached an ordinate of 138.0 m. This state has been maintained since 2012 by draining water from the created reservoir to Vistula in the amount of about 18,000 m3/d.
Excavation "Piaseczno" acts as a drainage in relation to the adjacent areas, protecting them against flooding. The long-term functioning of the open pit dewatering system has dried the areas around it, which created favorable conditions for changing the way of they usage. In the place of swampy, flooded and meadows areas, orchards and arable fields were created, as well as housing areas have developed.
Hydrogeological multivariate forecasts were made on a numerical model of the Tarnobrzeg Sulfur Basin using the results of the groundwater monitoring. The results of simulations made it possible to indicate the optimal solution in the field of water-ground relations in the areas within the depression range of the liquidated excavation "Piaseczno", depending on the height of the water level in the reservoir.
Increasing the water table level in the reservoir should follow according to the adopted schedule of the construction of ditches network and observations of changes in the Quaternary aquifer in the area surrounding the reservoir. Forecasts for damming water to the target height of 146.0 m above sea level indicate the possibility of gradual of works protecting the areas in the Piaseczno area against the effects of the progressive rebuilding of the original water conditions. The achievement of the final height of water in the reservoir must be preceded by the implementation of the basic drainage system, supplemented with specific melioration on selected areas of the land.
