This article was published within the Sub-project "Manufacturing of composite
materials sanitary ware", funded under the "Fostering Productive Innovation" Project,
supported by the World Bank and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Conservation and protection of the environment is one of the important and priority
areas of the World Bank work. The Bank requires environmental assessment for the
Sub-project to help to ensure its environmental safety and sustainability. Therefore, the
Environmental Management Plan (EMP) was designed in accordance with
Environmental Management Framework under the Project. The EMP is required for
formulation, implementation and monitoring of environmental protection measures
during and after commissioning of the Sub-project. When producing polymeric
composite material, all component materials should be used correctly to avoid any
adverse impact on the environment or human health. The article summarizes the
conclusions of the EMP and contains the information on safe handling of the raw
materials used in manufacturing of polymeric composites, especially unsaturated
polyester (UP) resins. Since UP resins contain styrene as the most important monomer, which is a flammable substance, these resins are therefore classified as dangerous goods and certain safety precautions have to be followed with regard to transport, storage and handling.
