The purpose of this paper is to outline the findings of the study into the quality of water used for oil-field water injection operations to support the reservoir pressure. Comparative assessment of injection water quality at cluster pump stations has been carried out by means of a particle size distribution analyzer. The device was used to measure the particle size distribution in wastewater. Water samples from cluster pump stations located in the area producing oil from the Romashkinskoye oil field, Devonian formation, confirmed the inhomogeneity of particle size contents and concentrations that did not exceed allowable values. Along with this, in some cases, the examined samples showed the oil content value higher than it is allowed and recommended. Additional microscopic observation allowed to detect the presence of finely dispersed oil droplets in water. Generalizing the qualitative research findings, the authors have acknowledged that the water to be injected into the field may require additional treatment which may contribute to improving waterflood sweep efficiency while developing untapped reserves in mature fields.
