The necessity of fulfilling as many conditions as possible in the specification resulted in
the creation of composite materials. This idea developed in the aerospace industry was
later used successfully in all industrial branches.
The two materials that have been used are chemically distinct, each of which retains its
properties in the composite, but provides the assembly with different properties and
characteristics. Thus, for the continuous phase, the matrix was used an aluminum alloy, and for the discontinuous phase, the reinforcement, a methyl polymethacrylate (PMMA) was used. This armature, although developed since 1928 and introduced on the market since 1933, has direct applications, especially in the structure of composite materials.
Due to the deformation properties at relatively low temperatures of 1000C, methyl
polymethylacrylate can be molded respecting almost any desired geometric shape. It is
worth mentioning that hardening occurs very quickly by introducing the mold into
water, resulting in higher productivity than the hot metal deformation technologies.
The bond between the matrix and the reinforcement will be made using bicomponent
adhesives by a bonding process.
