The paper deals with geotechnical design and assessment of pile foundations of the steel arch bridge structure, which was built on the motorway D1 in the Jablonov ? Studenec locality in Slovakia. Bridge structure is founded in a very difficult foundation conditions created by flysch rock environment. The bridge structure is statically difficult. Therefore, it was necessary to proceed in accordance with the rules applicable to the 3rd Geotechnical category when designing and assessing the bridge structure. The results of the geotechnical calculations were verified during the construction of the foundation structures by the in-situ static load tests of the piles for vertical and horizontal load-bearing capacity. The results of the load tests confirmed geotechnical calculations and therefore it has been designed with additional structural modifications to provide a reliable design of the bridge foundations structure. Reliable foundation of the bridge structure was achieved using large diameter piles with inclined micropiles.
