Due to its properties, lightweight, strength and corrosion resistance aluminum and its
alloys are chosen for building various industrial equipments that are used in different
specific environments. Aluminum and its alloys cannot escape from corrosion and it
requires a proper handling. Aluminum and its alloys will corrode very quickly after
cleaning so any treatment must be swift to prevent corrosion becoming trapped under
the base coating layers. Aluminum corrodes almost immediately forming an oxide layer
that will protect it from further corrosion.
There are a number of ways one can protect aluminum against corrosion: painting,
waxing, zinc-chromate priming, thin layer of pure aluminum, anodizing and coating
with a liquid protective solution.
The aim of this research work was to obtain an anodic nanoporous oxide layer on 1050
aluminum alloy substrate and to characterize their properties. After the anodic formation of alumina film the surfaces morphology, the roughness and the wetting properties were analyzed.
Following the anodic oxidation process on the surfaces of the Al1050 samples, a
nanoporous film of aluminum oxide was formed which radically changed their
morphology compared to the surface of electrochemically polished samples.
Due to the fact that all the parameters involved in the anodic oxidation process can
influence the morphological, structural and compositional characteristics of the
nanoporous layers of aluminum oxide, the work aims at highlighting the influences
caused by the variation of the imposed potential and the duration of the anodic oxidation process as well as the role of the static or dynamic regime of the electrolyte on the characteristics of nanoporous films of aluminum oxide.
With the increase of the anodic oxidation time for the potential of 15 V and 18 V
imposed in the anodic oxidation process, a decrease of the roughness parameters Ra was observed. The mean values of the contact angles regardless of the static or dynamic regime of the electrolyte show an upward trend with the increase in the duration time of the anodic oxidation.
