Sealing solutions play a crucial role in any space application. In this paper we present
the production and characterization of elastomeric composites for rubber seals used to
prevent unwanted loss of gas or liquid. We selected the following types of elastomers:
ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymers (EPDM), butyl rubber (IIR) and bromobutyl
rubber (Br-IIR) that have a good behaviour in the low temperature conditions of the
cosmic space. Two bipolymeric EPDM/IIR and EPDM/Br-IIR compounds were made,
containing other ingredients besides the two components. The blends were carried out in a Plasti-Corder Brabender mixer at 160?200°C. Plates required for tests were obtained by compression moulding using an electrically heated hydraulic press. The samples were analysed physico-mechanically for hardness, elasticity, 100% modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break. Regarding the field of application the samples were tested for fragility at cryogenic temperature (-70°C). The samples were macroscopically and microscopically analysed after impact and there was no sign of fragility for this temperature. Also there was no morphological altering of the surface after impact.
