The stone dust coming from stone processing plant located in Ostrom??, Czech
Republic, was examined in the presented paper as an alternative recyclable
environment-friendly material which can be effectively being used in construction as
partial replacement of natural sand. The tested dust is grey-brown colored and is a byproduct of sandstone processing from quarry Podhorn? ?jezd. Before the
characterization tests, the delivered stone dust was sieved on a certificate test sieve with a 0.25 mm mesh size. First, basic physical properties and particle size distribution of stone dust were tested. Chemical and mineralogical composition and morphology of
stone dust were characterized using X-Ray fluorescence, X-Ray diffraction, scanning
electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The pozzolanic activity of
stone dust was tested using both the Frattini and Chapelle tests. Then, the studied stone dust was used in composition of cement-based mortar in order to evaluate its effect on mortar mechanical resistance. In mortar composition, 25 mass% of natural sand was replaced with stone dust. Although the used stone dust was not pozzolana active, its incorporation into mortar mix led to the decrease in porosity and thus to the increase in mechanical parameters, such as compressive strength, flexural strength and dynamic Young?s moduli. Based on the obtained data, the researched stone dust was found to be prospective alternative material having great potential to replace natural sand in mortar mix design, whereas both environmental and financial benefits of its use are quite obvious.
