In the near future, all new buildings across European Union will have to meet the nearly Zero Energy Buildings requirements, namely to have a lower primary energy consumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions. In this regard, each country set its own targets concerning the reduction of these values. The paper presents a computational study regarding the thermal performances of an apartment, insulated in the first case scenario with a common solution such as expanded polystyrene and for the second and third case scenario with nano insulation materials such as aerogel and vacuum insulation panels. The analysed insulations have different thicknesses and the apartment presents several thermal bridges which are considered in the analysis. The study establishes the level of thermal performance for each solution, computing its annual heating demand and the related primary energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, which are examined both from current standards point of view and also from the perspective of the Romanian nZEB targets for the residential sector. The results emphasize that the goals are achieved, without supplementary actions, only by the thickest common insulations or by the most efficient nano insulations, the latter being a better choice from the material quantity point of view.
