Many cities in Slovakia are built alongside rivers and the socioeconomic use of rivers is reflected in their urban fabric. Rivers, as sources of water, energy and as sewage effluents, have been used for production purposes and have been surrounded by industrial areas, which today often lose their functions. Brownfields, abandoned and derelict, unused and underused sites along the watercourses, become today areas of urban revitalization and redevelopment. We have explored the spatial, architectural and urban planning contexts of urban regeneration strategies using the example of the city Martin in Slovakia and examined the potential of river Turiec and adjacent brownfields to serve as axes for urban redevelopment. Through architectural and urban design proposal we have tested the possibility to accommodate new functions and uses in the area, which might enhance the quality and livability of the urban environment, offer attractive public spaces and green corridors, with recreational and environmental functions.
