In this study, biosorptive characteristics of mustard waste functionalized with METALSORB (which is a precipitation agent used on an industrial scale) were examined for the removal of Cu(II) ions from galvanizing industrial wastewater. Batch experiments were performed in order to study the influence of initial Cu(II) ions concentration and contact time under optimal experimental conditions, and the results were compared with those obtained on mustard waste biomass (before functionalizing treatment). Equilibrium data of Cu(II) biosorption onto mustard waste functionalized with METALSORB (Met-MWB) were modelled using Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Raduskevich isotherm models, and the best model was selected based on linear regression. From a kinetic point of view, the Cu(II) biosorption on mustard waste functionalized with METALSORB attain the maximum after 30 min of contact time and follows the pseudo-second order kinetic mechanism. The mustard waste functionalized with METALSORB has excellent biosorptive characteristics for Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions, and can be used as biosorbent in the industrial wastewater treatment systems.
