It is very useful to use technologies of various fields. An important position in the field of knowledge engineering and knowledge technologies is the so-called decision support systems. The paper gives an overview of this highly exploited field of modern information technology applications, provides basic information on such systems, their architecture, the possibilities of their application, and some typical uses in the field of water management. Questions concerning effects and contradictions of multipurpose water management schemes are opened from a feasibility study up to the construction of hydraulic structures and operation of system. New questions are arising during operation because of the change of external conditions (climate change, change of natural conditions in contact with operated systems etc.) and the change of demands to water management schemes. It is known that the multi criteria analysis used for optimization of a multipurpose system can be far from objectivity (different units to measure effects, necessity to set weights to purposes). The second problem is the absence of risk evaluation in the procedure of multi criteria analysis (mainly missing the probability aspect). From all above mentioned questions originated research focused on the application of risk analysis (RA) methods to hydraulic schemes with multipurpose reservoirs. It was found the application od RA which can be used for more objective evaluation of multipurpose schemes, which is intuitive and which can be easily repeated with changing initial and boundary conditions.
