The fast development and densification of urban areas, combined with climate change conditions, have a consistent impact on urban water management services such as rainwater handling. The current pattern of urban development focuses on the creation and expansion of grey infrastructure, resulting in the deterioration of the natural environment and the loss of ecosystem functionality. This research aimed to identify and mix technical (hydraulic) solutions with green- infrastructure and with town-planning measures in order to obtain the greatest effects in reducing rainwater volumes collected by centralized sewerage networks. The main task was to prevent and minimize urban flooding consequences. In order to prepare existing and future cities for this challenge, the authors developed a methodology using the green infrastructure concept and urban planning methods, applied at an urban scale. Green infrastructure components identified in international research projects so far had been studied only individually, and their effects had been poorly estimated. A secondary benefit of this methodology was the improvement of environmental features and an increased level of urban comfort. The research took into consideration future challenges such as the growth of the global urban population and the forecast scenarios relating to climate change.
