Stone columns are one of the most used technologies of soil improvement in Slovakia. An impact of improvement depends on properties of original subsoil as well as properties of coarse - grained materials used for stone columns. Stone columns can be made of pebble gravels, crushed pebble gravels or quarry stones. Two different types (sizes) of quarry stone were used on two different building sites in similar engineering - geological conditions. There wasn?t direct comparison of both materials. The properties of used quarry stones were determined using laboratory and in ? situ tests. Aim of the study presented in this article is the comparison of both materials on a typical example from practise. The numerical analysis of the settlement of a road embankment based on subsoil improved by stone columns is presented. The results showed that the final settlement of the road embankment was about 24 mm in the case of a smaller fraction of quarry stone and about 20 mm in the case of a bigger fraction of quarry stone. The differences in the time required for consolidation were about 13 %. The results also showed that the stone columns significantly reduced settlement of the road embankment as well as the time required for full consolidation of the subsoil.
