Tailings are the waste product of mining industry which is usually deposited in the form of slurry. In the present study, laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the permeability properties of coal mine tailings. The investigation includes the compressibility and consolidation behavior of tailings material of different gradations upon application of incremental loads in large size hydraulic consolidometer. The samples were collected from open pit Tur?w Coal Mine in Poland. Remolded samples were manufactured in laboratory as three batches of different size-ratio between fine and coarse particles, i.e. 0.5, 0.75, 0.25. Direct measurements of permeability (discharge under constant pressure) were conducted at the end of each load increment and then hydraulic conductivity were calculated. In addition this estimated hydraulic conductivity values were compared to indirect calculations using consolidation test data. Comprehensive analysis revealed that the direct hydraulic conductivity is larger than those from examination consolidation curve. It is found that, the relationships between void ratio and compressibility, as well as hydraulic conductivity, can be fitted with logarithmic functions.
