The purpose of this article is to discuss the authigenic chlorite, illite and illite-smectite mixed layers at the sandstone of upper Triassic reservoir at Euphrates graben fields east of Syria related to their structural, morphology and diagenetic events and precipitation. The upper Triassic sandstone reservoir is one of the most important oil and gas reser-voirs at the east of Syria; it contains about 60 % of the total hydrocarbon volume at the area. Petrographical analyses combined with the different core analysis using polarized, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dis-persive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) system have been used in this article. The upper Tri-assic sandstones are typically of quartz arenite; detrital quartz is the dominant phase (mean 74%). The authigenic clay minerals of this reservoir are dominated by kaolinite, chlorite, illite, and illite-smectite mixture. Authigenic chlorites are found in range from traces to ~13%, most of the chlorite in the form of overgrowth and cover the detrital grains. Authigenic illite found in traces to ~4% of the whole rock sample, while the il-lite-smectite mixture layers are found in traces~7%. Both of illite, and illite-smectite mixture are identified as grain coating or pore filling phase composed of well-crystallized lath-like blades (10 ?m), and short fiber-like morphology partially filled the intergranular pore and has nucleated at the margins of detrital clay surfaces. The differ-ent analyses indicate the illite and illite-smectite mixture are precipitated durial deep burial diagenesis.
