In this study, the feasibility of zwitterionic surfactants for EOR from high-temperature and high-salinity reservoir was investigated. Three different types of zwitterionic betaine surfactants were selected based on their abilities to address issues of displacement oil from high-temperature and high-salinity reservoir. And their abilities of reducing interfacial and surface tension (IFT), increasing viscosity, and long-term stability at high temperature and high salinity were investigated and compared with the most commonly used non-ionic surfactants in some oilfield in Russian Federation. Further, the oil displacement efficiency of these select surfactants were evaluated by core flooding experiments under high salinity reservoir water at different temperatures from 25 to 90 0? and different permeability conditions. The results showed that at high temperature (90 0?), the three zwitterionic betaine surfactants still can remain a relative high viscosity compared with the viscosity at low temperature (25 0?), while the viscosities of other two commercial used surfactants were significantly decreased with the increase of temperature. The three zwitterionic betaine surfactants showed a good interfacial tension (IFT) in general. The core flooding experiments at high-temperature conditions showed that the three zwitterionic betaine surfactants could yield an additional oil recovery of approximately 30 and 43 % at low and high permeability condition, respectively, which are far higher than that of the two commercial surfactants (7 and 15 % at low and high permeability condition, respectively).
These results indicated that the three zwitterionic betaine surfactants have a great potential for improving oil recovery from high-temperature and high-salinity reservoir.
