The activities carried out in the georeactor area during and after the completion of the process of extracting fuels based on underground coal gasification have a significant role in minimizing the environmental impact of the technology. Selecting the optimum, most effective method of removing contaminants from the underground coal gasification process should help to increase the safety of the process.
The article deals with the idea of filling a post-processing cavern. The method involving geotechnics used to fill empty spaces in the rock mass is a well-known and popular solution. The use of void fill materials to prevent surface deformation along with reactive materials to limit the potential for the spread of liquid and gaseous contaminants is an innovative idea that allows for increased in situ safety.
The objective of the article is to present the requirements for reactive materials to be used to protect the environment against the ingress of liquid and gaseous pollutants and their further migration beyond the georeactor zone during and after the gasification process. The article focuses on the criteria determining the possibilities and methods of applying materials aimed to fill caverns in georeactors.
The developed method can be used in the process as an additional safeguard in the case of a potential danger of spreading contamination in the event of an uncontrolled/unpredictable process that may lead to emergency.
