With the decrease of conventional oil production, the role of heavy hydrocarbons in the world energy balance will continue to increase in the near future. Heavy oil and natural bitumen as two of the alternative sources are perhaps the most readily available to meet short- and long-term needs. Intrastratal oxidation requires a formation temperature in the range of 250-350°C, at which it is possible to achieve an in-situ oil upgrading through the low-temperature oxidation reactions of petroleum hydrocarbons. Usually, such a high temperature in reservoirs can be achieved by the injection of binary mixtures or thermal steam. When choosing the binary mixtures it is useful to focus attention on their environmental safety and ability to generate a proton of hydrogen. Initiation of reactions of low-temperature oxidation in the presence of air, is also possible with the help of effective heterogeneous or homogeneous catalysts. The results of experiments on the oxidation of viscous oil deposits carboxylic atmospheric oxygen in the presence of oxidation catalyst and at temperatures and pressures close to the reservoir conditions are presented. Decreasing of density and viscosity of oils converted, increasing of oils and asphaltenes content and the emergence of high-molecular n-alkanes are revealed.
