This paper presents an original approach on developing and testing an extruder for paste-like materials for conventional 3D printers based on Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology. The main advantage of such technology is that it allows the final product to be modified / altered after fabrication i.e. either to correct printing irregularities or simply give it another design form. The material is fed into the extrusion nozzle via a plastic cylinder driven by an electric actuator. Various extruding nozzles were used during experiments in order to obtain different printing quality. The heating temperature of the buildup material is set at maximum 80 degrees Celsius and forced air cooling is used to assists the partial hardening process of the printed material. Various deformable materials such as polymer clay, plasticine, silicone, acrylic polymers were used to test the built extruder prototype. The proposed extruder proved to be a cheap and simple replacement solution for a conventional FDM extruder.
