This paper presents an approach of using Augmented Reality (RA) technology for operator training in quality inspection of various large sized metallic products such as pipes, weldings, metal sheets, etc. An Android software application has been developed and implemented using Unity 3D Software Development Package(TM). The proposed application simulates the use of various ultrasonic sensors/probes to train human operators without the need to use the actual expensive inspection equipment. The user manipulates a 3D printed inspection device which has been replicated in an augmented reality experience. The application allows the user to visualize real ultrasonic images of various artificial defects embedded within the inspected product. This is done by displaying defects in various imaging modes, according to user preference and the direction of movement of the inspection device in relationship with the inspected product. Testing of the application has been done in order to evaluate its ease of use for human operators.
