The monolithic pattern of rocks from two large intrusive massifs in the Fennoscandian Shield is assessed by analyzing their macro- and microfracturing.
Macro- and microfracturing was analyzed on rapakivi granites from the Neoproterozoic Salmi multi-phase massif and gabbrodolerite from the Paleoproterozoic Ropruchei sill.
Macrofracturing was studied on bedrock exposures in the field. Macrofracturing is understood as a fracture which is visible within the rock exposure and which varies in size from 10 cm to 100 m. Microfracturing was analyzed by the optical method using thin sections of rocks prepared from oriented samples collected in the field. A microfracture is a fracture which is visible under the microscope and which varies in size from 0.01 cm to several centimetres.
The results of the study have revealed a correlation in the orientation of well-defined macro- and microfracturing visible on stereographic diagrams. Macro- and microfracturing is correlated with the general pattern of the tectonic dislocation of rock massifs.
Correlation analysis of macro- and microfracturing is made to delineate more monolithic rock zones in massifs. Within a deposit such analysis is made to assess the quality of zones, especially when analysis of macrofracturing alone does not give a reliable answer.
