This paper presents a technique for the detection of elliptic objects connected with subsidence troughs in radar interferograms using the Hough transform. The generalized Hough transform to detect arbitrary shapes, including ellipses, requires a five-dimensional accumulator array, which occupies a very large part of the memory. For this reason, to overcome memory problems, a modified algorithm using a one-dimensional accumulator array was applied. This modification helped also to reduce the computation time. In this work, radar interferograms obtained by the DInSAR method (Differential Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar) were used. For tests, selected fragments of interferograms from the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Southern Poland) area were chosen. This region is particularly susceptible to the occurrence of different kinds of subsidence caused by intensive coal exploitation. For this type of images, subsidence troughs have an elliptical shape in the form of interference fringes. Therefore, we can assess the suitability of the presented method for the automatic detection of relatively dangerous places where the terrain begins to subside. In our calculations we also used, apart from detecting ellipses, the circle detection because, in some cases of subsidence troughs extraction, it gives satisfying results. Moreover, it is also important that this version of the Hough transform allows for a significant reduction in the computation time. Our studies were complicated for several reasons, e.g. noise causing both extended calculations and the detection of additional objects, as well as the presence of deformed and often incomplete objects.
