Nowadays we can see rapid increase in the amount and speed of acquired environmental data and automate the process of collection. The development of multilayer, interoperable GIS increases the requirements for the correct, comprehensive description of the presented objects and phenomena.
The article presents a proposal of spatial boundaries classification for the purpose of spatial information systems improvement. Vector spatial information model use division into point, line and surface objects. This model does not allow the proper representation and description of boundaries, which are often a complex phenomenon with features and functions different from neighboring surface objects. Boundary is reduced to the edge of the figure, without the possibility of extending, unique description. Proposed spatial boundaries classification could expand the system's capabilities. The classification refers to the conceptual model of reality used for spatial data acquisition. For describing spatial data, division of boundaries into three types is proposed: ?established?, ?interpreted? and ?negotiable?. The division takes into account the aims and character of delimitation and in the next step, let to choose the correct data management methods. A simple code on the character of the boundaries allow quick verification of the compatibility and correctness of operations performed on them.
