The periodical inspection of areas from closed/in closure process mines is a very difficult and labor-intensive activity. Processing of data , mainly in digital and graphical form, together with written reports can be substantially simplified using simple, available and cheap common purpose GIS/GPS hardware and software tools. The paper deals with a tracking algorithm for monitoring the closed mines area in order to obtain periodic images and maps with the state of facilities. The main achievement is the trans-calculation of coordinates in order to be represented in different projection and cartographic systems. An usual tracking device is used for registering the monitoring path, the database of coordinates can be represented on different maps and the changes between two subsequent records, as the monthly, annual averages can be analysed and represented. In Jiu Valley coalfield many mines are in different stages of closure, their periodic monitoring involves a huge amount of manpower. The use of a cheap and available hardware and software is useful, together with the provided algorithm, is appropriate for facilitating this operation and reducing monitoring costs. The geo-referencing realized by this way is very useful for the monitoring reports and estimation of rehabilitation works, or the changes in landscape, built areas, green and gray fields, condition of rehabilitation - re-vegetation and other facilities enabling the reconstruction of their past evolution.
