The knowledge of temporal changes in land use as well as the proper interpretation of such changes is one of the factors that allow accurate diagnosis of problems that affect the development of rural areas. It helps to make decisions related to various types of changes that the areas may undergo. The identification of changes in land use is possible thanks to the analyses of satellite imaging, aerial scanning, and ground-based measurements completed with different measuring methods. Characteristic features of each of the approaches make them suitable for different scales and levels of accuracy. The analysis of cadastral databases up-to-dateness is possible only while having the information on land use in every parcel. Especially when land fragmentation indices are unfavorable in a given area, it is crucial to determine the range of different land use types with high accuracy. Parcels in such areas are commonly small and have irregular shapes. In this case, it is advisable to use data obtained with laser scanning. The analysis of three dimensional data allows to expose permanently abandoned land by identifying areas covered with trees and shrubs where cadastral data shows different types of land use.
The article shows model approaches to the analysis, which include stages from computing input data obtained with laser scanning to the identification of permanently abandoned land. The area from Southern Poland chosen for this study is characterized by dynamic temporal changes of the forms of use, causing the information on it out of date. The method presented in this work proved to be highly effective in terms of accurate assessment of cadastral databases up-to-dateness as well as their rapid update.
