Mapping of appearance and geometry of complicated industrial objects is a complex problem which requires that properly planned and prepared surveys are performed. Usually, detailed inventory must be performed for industrial objects. However, their complicated structure and difficult access to their entre surfaces result in limited visibility of the object.
In this paper the commercially available CAD programmes (Kubit PointSense, LupoScan Pro, Autocad 2016 Geomagic Studio) are discussed; they enable the 3D modelling of industrial objects in a point cloud. Functionality of those programmes was tested with particular emphasis on the degree of automation of shape detection and the ability to consider the topology. The elements of transmission infrastructure, such as pipes, nodes, tanks etc. were used as reference data.
The influence of the point cloud density on correctness of automatic shape detection was also analysed. The differences between the reference libraries of shapes and the models generated basing on the point clouds were examined. Results obtained by means of the mentioned software tools were compared and they may be a valuable information source for professionals involved in development of documentation of industrial objects for BIM systems.
