Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data have a high commercial value. On many occasions, it is crucial to protect the fetched data in order to authenticate them and identify their original ownership. A procedure for protecting terrestrial LiDAR data is introduced in this paper. It consists of two steps: 1) Defining the positions of a watermark (i.e. markers), and 2) Embedding the watermark by modifying the locations of the points slightly within a circular area around the marker by applying the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). The same steps are performed for watermark extraction where, in the second step, the existence of the watermark is checked. Various experiments were performed to analyse the influence of different sizes of the circular area around the marker (i.e. marker radius) on the effectiveness of the watermark embedding/extracting process. Thus, the robustness of the watermarking scheme was evaluated against various common attacks that can destroy an embedded watermark, such as a noise addition and a random removal of the points. As the results show, the higher values of marker radius lead to better robustness of the watermark scheme; however, the watermarking process takes more time. Thus, a proper balance needs to be reached between the robustness and the computational demands.
