GIS-Based Local Geomorphological Constraints Assessment (A Case Study: Cluj- Napoca Municipality, Romania). This paper deals with the implications of geomorphological constraints on urban sprawl specific to the new residential suburbs of Cluj-Napoca Municipality (Romania). In many cases, the development and the territorial evolution of the urban residential units are conditioned or restricted by the different landforms and slope processes (e.g. landslides). Cluj-Napoca Municipality area has experienced during recent years (2004-2014) a rapid urban sprawl and a lot of new buildings that are now inside of areas affected by active landslides. Our methodology encompasses geomorphological analysis and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to assess the terrain stability in Borhanci Suburb, a new residential area located in the south-eastern part of the city. In these peripheral urban areas, the extension of built-up units is constraint by local morphology and active geomorphological processes. Slope declivity, buildings types and geomorphological processes were assessed in order to detect, analyze and mapping the situations where, in the process of buildings construction, topographical parameters and landslide risk have been considered and the cases were not. On this basis, a detailed mapping of the terrain instability has been realized at the microscale level and a map of the landslide probability was obtained. The main results of the methodology offer relevant information necessary to decision-making process in urban planning.
