Around one quarter of the Romanian territory is covered with forests but the surface has been decreasing steadily due to increased legal and illegal logging and reduced efforts towards reforestation. This led to economic problems and uncertainties about the current stock and location of the Romanian forests. Very few empirical studies have been undertaken regarding this topic especially at the local level. Using data from 41 Romanian counties between 1995 and 2015, our paper aims to find the relationship between the variation of the forest land area at the local level and three explanatory variables, namely the local economic growth, the reforestation efforts and the growth of local logging. We find robust results that suggest that the forest land area is negatively influenced by the local economic growth and positively influenced by the growth of reforestation.
