Modern remote sensing techniques ? passive and active - undergo considerable development in terms of spectral, temporal and geometric resolution of observations. The more and more sophisticated satellite observing systems are involved first in defence and geospatial intelligence tasks. Nevertheless apart from strictly military applications they can be exploited as ?dual-use? systems for civilian applications as well. The idea of this paper is to demonstrate, based on the literature review, how far high resolution satellite imagery can be exploited for navigation charts updating. Almost the same requirements of flight safety are to be fulfilled for military and civilian aerial operations. The special attention is then paid on Aerodrome Obstacle Charts ICAO type B (AOC-ICAO B) and very high resolution radar imagery (SAR). The updating process consists of mapping of all land cover changes including infrastructure construction, forests cutting down or forest growth, urban sprawl, etc? Official digital topographic databases and aerial laser scanning are often recommended as the sources of data about terrain/surface elevation and artificial (manmade) obstacles. Nevertheless very high resolution radar imagery seems to be an efficient tool permitting detection and mapping of metallic and concrete constructions like telecommunication masts, isolated buildings, etc., particularly in suburban and urban areas.
