Wastewater treatment plants that currently lack biological step have a low efficiency in wastewater treatment. This causes polluted emissions to be discharged into emissaries. An example of this is Drobeta Turnu Severin wastewater treatment plant.
Drobeta Turnu Severin City in Mehedinti county currently has 108 246 inhabitants, of which 80% benefit from centralized drinking water distribution and centralized system for collecting and transporting wastewater to the treatment plant. Drobeta Turnu Severin has a wastewater treatment station operating since 2011 and using outdated treatment technology. Treated wastewater discharged into the environment (river Topolnita) located about 200 m from the Treatment Station, which flows into the Danube, does not meet quality requirements set by NTPA 001/2005, which represents the transposition, into Romanian legislation, the EU Environmental Directive. Wastewater Treatment Plant in Drobeta Turnu Severin currently has only a mechanical treatment stage, which allows the mechanical removal of large solids, sand and fat. Suspended solids in wastewater are deposited at a rate of 60% in primary clarifiers, primary sedimentation follows with 60% separation of suspended solids from the main water line. By separating suspended solids from the wastewater, a 25% reduction biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) takes place. This paper will examine the effectiveness of Drobeta Turnu Severin treatment plant, considering the fact that it contains no biological stage. In light of an analysis of wastewater quality by using its registered parameters at the exit of the treatment plant, a comparison with the limits permitted by law will be made. Biological stage absence does not allow quality parameters of treated wastewater, discharged into the environment, to be in accordance with NTPA 001/2005 legislation. |
