East Donbass is one of the oldest coal mining area of South Russia. The most significant change of surface and groundwater water quality. This study is devoted to the investigation of chemical properties of surface waters. The main source of the contamination of surface and groundwater are industrial and domestic wastewaters, drainage and mine waters. Surface waters within the region have high mineralization and water hardness. Water in springs and wells is unsuitable for potable use due to high salinity and hardness, a high concentration of iron, phenols and oil products, which is a consequence of vulnerability of underground waters. According to the ionic composition of surface waters of the city can be estimated as sulfate-sodium or chloride-sulphate-sodium waters. Pollution of ponds and streams with sulphate linked to their supply dumps, which issued from the earth sulphides are oxidised by air to sulphate, as well as with mine water. Monitoring of liquidation of mines of East Donbass shows that currently the water quality of almost all rivers are classified as "very dirty" and "extremely dirty" with a large list of critical indicators of pollution. In most cases, the class of "extremely dirty" is maintained throughout the rivers or changes to it in the monitoring section. The quality of the water in the river Tuzlov slightly lower compared to the Seversky Donetsk.
