In this study preparation of oil absorbent composite is described. Polyacrylic acid / Na-montmorillonite composite was synthesized by polymerization of acrylic acid on the surface of the sodium bentonite. FTIR spectrum of absorbent was recorded, and it was shown that polyacrylic acid reacted with bentonite layers. In this work the swelling kinetics of obtained composite was investigated and the main kinetic parameters - the swelling rate and the swelling kinetic constants were determined. In addition to demonstrate the suitability of synthesized material for oil spill cleanup application, the floatability of absorbent was measured. Effect of mass ratio of bentonite to acrylic acid in the monomer mixture on the absorbency was determined. The results of absorption showed that the maximum swelling degree and the absorption rate of oil correspond to PAA / Na-montmorillonite composite with mass ratio of bentonite to acrylic acid 2,5:1. The high floatability and effectiveness of absorbent demonstrated that synthesized composite can be used for removing oil from water surface.
