Numerous past studies proved the potential of fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize aquatic organic matter and its link to function and chemical water quality. It was proposed as an optimum monitoring method due to its advantages, such as: rapid measurements, high sensitivity and selectivity, requires small quantities of sample with little or no sample preparation. Although fluorescence spectroscopy was used on different types of water systems, no complex study was undertaken to compare the fluorescence signal of organic matter from multiple sources. This study aimed to develop a database with fluorescence spectra of samples collected from urban, rural and industrials sites. The study explored the differences between samples that could be used to monitor the system and track pollution sources. The database included rivers contaminated with petroleum products or sewage, animal wastewater, surface runoff, precipitation, ground water, tap water, natural and artificial lakes, ponds, springs from different locations. Results showed peculiarities in fluorescence intensity of the main fluorescence fractions. Also, different fluorescence fingerprints were obtained for petroleum and sewage samples, facilitating separation of pollution sources. The study showed that fluorescence spectroscopy can be effectively used to monitor urban and rural water systems and identify the type and quantity of pollution.
