The paper aims to present the possibility of using surface water resource for irrigation in local arrangements in the West Plain of Romania. Irrigation is among the biggest consumers of freshwater worldwide and water demands for irrigation in Bega River basin are continuously increasing. On Bega River course, along with flood defense works, in the 1960 were also arranged water catchments with the role of using water in agriculture, even though most of arable land were arranged for drainage. To ensure the needed flow, initially for navigation on Bega river, also complementary discharge from Timis river is possible on the double deviation between this two rivers. In recent years an increased interest it is shown and several projects to redevelop local irrigation arrangements have been started, in order to ensure stable and increased yield production, in many cases in existing drainage arrangements. The research objectives are to determine water quality and water availability for irrigation in established sections on the Bega River where these arrangements can be implemented. For this, research study was carried out on existing but nonfunctional arrangements and field data were studied in the laboratory. The paper also analyze the impact that irrigation works have on the environment in according to the European Regulations.
