The paper aims at presenting oily water separators as one of the key components of complex lubrication systems used in seagoing vessels. Furthermore, the paper presents commonly used standardized connection flanges and pumps that may be considered a meaningful parameter in the evaluation of the efficiency of oily waste treatment systems in seagoing vessels. The objective of the current study was to discuss the working principles of selected oily water separators and to analyze their capacity, throughput as well as conformity to the provisions of the Marpol 73/78 Convention as applicable to the Baltic Sea region. Safety Data Sheets and manuals published by oily water separator manufacturers were used for the purposes of this paper. In addition, the paper provides a wide range of information based on ISO standards concerning the required dimensions of standardized connection flanges and pumps used in a vessel?s lubrication system. The analysis presented in the paper showed a correlation between the type of oil pump used and the size of connecting flanges throughout the oily waste separation process. The identified parameters showed a significant influence on the duration of the separation process, throughput and the quality of water after the separation of oily particles. Moreover, the analysis identified those separator models that are fully capable of treating oily waste in accordance with the provisions of the Marpol 73/78 Convention as applicable to the Baltic Sea region. The studies conducted are for general reference only and as such should not affect the readers' scientific thinking. The main purpose of this paper was to sensitize the readers to the relations between oily water separators and the lubrication system used in a seagoing vessel as a whole.
