The ecological situation of the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas has been given special attention due to their extremely vulnerable environment. In comparison with other areas, the Arctic remains a clean environment, but heavy metals occupy a special place among priority pollutants. There are a lot of studies of heavy metals in the soil, but not enough information on the joint content and physicochemical factors that affect the metals accumulation in the Arctic soils. Therefore, this paper presents identification of correlations between the heavy metals content and the agrochemical parameters in Arctic soils.
In 36 soil samples, collecting from the territories of archipelago Svalbard, Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land, Solovetsky, Kolguev Island, Vaigach Island, was evaluated the total content of heavy metals and metalloid: Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Cr, V, Ti, As, Sr by means of X-ray fuorescence analysis (XRF), in accordance with method M049-P/04. The following soil characteristics were examined: texture by means of elutriation, pH, organic matter content, mineralization, phosphorous (P2O5) and oil content. The data were processed by the standard methods of mathematical statistics, using the program SPSS. For all the analyses, differences were considered significant at the level of p < 0.05.
