This paper addresses mechanisms of destruction of methane-saturated coal at micro- and macro-levels under dynamical impact due to methane transition from its natural bound to a free state. The focus is on possible destruction of practically impenetrable (crushed and pressed) coal. Our study is based on analysis of experimental investigations and computed modeling.
The experimental investigations involved experiments with rock pre-cracking under explosive impact and analysis of photo images of coal microstructure at a 0.1 to 100 mcm range. As demonstrated experimentally, the induced porosity may increase to 5% under dynamical impact, and this may dramatically change conditions for methane release from coal substance. The theoretical study involved simulation of micro- and macrocrack development with bound methane transforming into a free state in the crack sides. The study novelty is associated with assessment of possibility for the destruction transition from micro- to macro-level for different conditions of methane state in coal.
The resultant regularities help to predict coal reaction to dynamical impact. This is of much importance for technology of preliminary degasation of coal seams in a quasi-static mode and for technology of provoking coal dynamic destruction.
