Due to the growing importance of forest changes and water management as factors influencing hydro-sedimentary dynamics and hydrological services, the analysis of the forest ? water links may prove to be relevant for creating joint and adequate management schemes for these ecosystems. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the possible influences upon the hydro-sedimentary dynamics in the upper basin of Jiu River (2540 km2), induced by the changes in forest cover between 2000 and 2012.
The relationship between the forest ecosystem changes and hydro-sedimentary dynamics was approached by two ways: a) through a theoretical/conceptual approach, based on the DPSIR (Driving forces, Pressures, States, Impacts, Responses) framework, legislative and administrative documents on forest and water management, as well as on expert judgment, and b) from the cartographical and statistical perspective, forested land cover dynamics were correlated with the trend analysis in the suspended sediment series for the period 2000 ? 2012. As a result, in some of the five sub-basins that we analyzed, the forest change dynamics had consequences on the increase or decrease of suspended sediment discharge, especially in the small, spring-oriented watersheds.
Our research asserts the need for a better coordination between forest and water management actions, in order to facilitate an appropriate control of the rivers? dynamics in the context of current and potential forest cover in Jiu River Basin.
