The floodplain forest ecosystems have the unique biodiversity despite of long-term human alternations of floodplain landscapes. The priorities of nature conservation in central European floodplains currently aimed to coppice and standard-with-coppice forest stands, which are relics of historical ways of forest management. This paper deals with a proposal of management strategy for floodplain forests in the Czech Republic. A management strategy which would compromise the commercial interests of production of renewable wood mass as well as preservation of biodiversity and other (often less significant) non-wood-producing roles of the forest can be based on the application of the functional potential of forests. Thus, the proposed conservation strategy is based on the division of the study area concerned into functional zones, to which an appropriate form of management is allocated that can be taken over and implemented by forest management decision makers.
