In this study, cobalt oxide (Co3O4) was prepared by thermolysis of cobalt (II) oxalate at 500°C. This oxide was characterized by IR spectroscopy, XRD (X-ray diffraction) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The adsorption of phenol and lead (II) ions, both singly and in combination, by obtained and characterized Co3O4 was studied in batch system. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were conducted to study the effects of solid : liquid ratio, pH, contact time and initial concentration of the pollutants. The studied adsorbent exhibited more efficiency in the adsorption process toward lead (II) compared to phenol. The equilibrium sorption data were modeled using Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms and the last one provided an excellent fit of the experimental data, obtaining a maximum adsorption capacity of 14.85 mg/g and 6.38 mg/g for lead (II) and phenol, respectively. By applying the kinetic models to the experimental data it was found that the adsorption of both pollutants onto studied material is described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results demonstrate that Co3O4 could be efficient applied in treatment of water contaminated with both inorganic and organic pollutants.
