Fish farming has a very long and rich tradition in the area of the Czech Republic. As the golden age of fish farming and building of fishponds, the second half of 15th century and whole 16th century are considered. In this period, huge number of fishponds was built in many parts of the Czech Republic. Many fishponds ceased to exist since this era but many of them remained until present. This means, besides others, that there are many fishponds within the Czech landscape which are very old. Some of them underwent reconstruction in past but many are still in their original shape. The technology of building has changed a lot in past. Mainly the steepness of upstream and downstream slopes of dams was very different in past. The steepness of dam slopes is strongly affecting the stability of earth body and its filtration properties. Safety of water reservoirs is a very important issue and their maintenance is becoming even more important with respect to the need of increasing landscape water storage capacity. Thus, it is very important to have an information about the properties of dams. It is impossible to measure effectively necessary data in the field as the number of such fishponds is very high. Therefore, detail elevation data available for the entire are of the Czech Republic were used to get demanded information. These data are provided by the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre and have an origin in application of lidar. The area around towns ?esk? Brod, Kostelec nad ?ern?mi lesy, Kou?im, Z?smuky and Uhl??sk? Janovice was used for the study focused on the applicability of this type of data. The shape of fishpond dams was analysed based on the processed elevation data for three selected fishponds. The results confirm the generally steeper slopes of old fishpond dams in comparison with those built according to present technical standards but the difference is not so strong as expected. The applicability of used data for given purpose was also confirmed.
