Based on data from long-term observations, dedicated to the study of mercury behavior in water bodies at the estuarine area of the Northern Dvina River, factors, criteria and indicators were identified.
The choice of the "reference object" of the Northern Dvina River, due to the fact that based on the literature, and field studies here identified a relatively stable level of mercury in different components of the natural environment, and there are sources of anthropogenic mercury in the ecosystem in the absence of natural factors contributing to the increasing concentrations. Natural levels of mercury comparable to other, devoid of human influence, regions of the Arctic basin.
For the purposes of modeling the processes of migration and transformation of mercury in the waters of the Northern Dvina conducted the zoning of the mouth area of the mercury content in bottom sediments, surface and near-bottom water horizons. This helped to clarify the boundaries of the parcels that were identified at relatively abrupt changes in the concentrations of all forms of migration of mercury in water and sediments. Each of these phases is characterized by its hydrochemical, hydrological conditions and the conditions of receipt, distribution and migration of mercury in the water column.
For each of the selected areas identified priority factors that affect the behavior of mercury.
Investigated the environmental factors influencing the migration and transformation of mercury in water and bottom sediments. Initially, for obtaining the relationship between mercury and various physico-chemical parameters of water were used the results of the regression analysis. Analyzed the influence of factors such as temperature, salinity, oxygen content, organic acids, hydrodynamic activity, etc.
