From the modern point of view, geochemical barriers (GCB) are the self-organizing components of geochemical systems (GCS), where occurs the activization of physical and chemical processes, which leads to the transformation of the association of chemical elements and compounds media. Currently, this approach allows for the development of effective technologies for the protection and purification of the polluted components of the geological environment, including the underground water and neighbor media.
In the article, the models of the pollutants behavior in the aquatic systems are shown. Geochemical barriers in this case prevent penetration of pollutants from the extern sources and determine their movement between the components of the system. These processes were described in the article using the concept of geochemical markers. In our case this was polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These compounds are relatively stable in the environment, they are caused traditionally by certain technogenic and natural processes. The nature of such processes can be identified taken into account data on PAHs concentrations in the contacting media, using models based on the ratios of polyarenes and on the analysis of PAH complexes in the contacting environments.
On the example of the aquatic system of Severnaya Dvina River we demonstrated the high efficiency of these approaches in the study of varied hydrological and hydroecological processes. It allows to understand new spatial temporal regularities of the hydrological environment state.
