Online monitoring of plankton in lake-type reservoirs requires the development of a model which is based on previous information, can assess the current state and predict the concentration of plankton in the future. An improved view of previous periods is possible on the basis of reanalysis techniques. These data can be used as a basis for modeling the profile of wind characteristics and the temperature profile which varies with its influence. A one-dimensional model for lake type reservoir is used in the program complex LAKE, which was developed by V.M. Stepanenko from The Moscow State University. It computes temperature, horizontal velocities, oxygen, carbon dioxide and methane in the basin. Modification of the program complex and its validation were realized. The modification caused changing the procedure of input data assignment, ensured the possibility of using the results of field measurements as starting profiles, led to the greater consideration of wind influence on mixing and allowed to reproduce general forms of temperature distribution more accurately. Validation was realized with a comprehensive observational data set gathered at three lakes located in Russia and Finland. Numerical results obtained with the modified version of program complex LAKE are in fair agreement with field measurement data. All prognostic variables are treated in a unified manner via a generic one dimensional transport equation for horizontally averaged property. A water body interacts with underlying sediments. These sediments are represented by a set of vertical columns with heat, moisture and CH4 transport inside. The value of a key calibration constant regulating methane production in sediments corresponded well to observation. Davis Instruments meteorological station is used for providing initial data in computations. Ship-based modules perform in situ hydrophysical and biological measurements and instant processing, assessment and forecast. The measurements and processing provide further forecast of water quality. The designed module includes a Davis Instruments meteorological station, a CTD probe, a velocity meter, a Secchi disk, a sampler, a laptop with the software, a microscope with a digital camera and a set of devices for digitizing and transmitting information to a server. The results of using the equipment make evident the importance of seasonal diurnal stratification for the plankton growth and its spatial distribution. The information may be provided to a wide range of users, including experts, scientists and decision makers via Internet.
