MINERALOGY OF METABASITES OF AN OPHIOLITE ASSOCIATION FROM THE KUZNETSK ALATAU (SW SIBERIA)

The Kuznetsk Alatau ridge represents a NW segment of the Altai-Sayan folded belt (ASFB) and is considered as a Caledonian collisional system. The ophiolites from the northern slope of this ridge are the most representative fragments of suboceanic crust. This work presents the results of a study of the mineralogical composition of metabasites from ophiolite paragenesis of the Severnaya, Zelenaya, Barkhatnaya mountains and Semenovsky massif. The samples from the gabbroid and subvolcanic complexes were selected and studied in thin- and polished sections. The compositions of the main rock-forming minerals were investigated in detail on an electron microscope equipped with micro-dispersion analyzer (TESCAN VEGA LMU II).
The obtained data on the phase relationships and changes in the chemical compositions of the minerals (feldspars, amphiboles) suggest several stages of metamorphic transformation of the studied rocks. This is evidenced by a change in the composition of plagioclase: bytownite - labrador - andesine - oligoclase - albite, wide variations in the composition of amphiboles, and the behaviour of accessory minerals. All this reflects the variability of thermodynamic parameters - from progressive to retrograde metamorphism. At the same time, the presence of K-Na feldspar suggests a probable secondary metasomatic transformation of rocks. |
