Air pollution represents at present the biggest threat to human health due to high levels of pollutant emissions, usually in high-traffic urban areas. Air pollution has been associated with a number of health problems, including heart disease and lung cancer. Urbanization associated with rapid industrial development has led to serious air pollution problems in many large cities across Europe with significant impact on public health and even on the global climate. Information on air quality in urban areas is an important way of making citizens aware of their participation in measures aimed at reducing traffic. Generally, exposure to air pollutants is higher in urban areas than in rural areas due to more intense road traffic. In the present work, we analyzed the daily and monthly variation of the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration in the environment due to road traffic in the city of Galati, Romania. For the analysis of the NO2 concentration variation in this city, the data available from the single traffic monitoring station, measured over six years, was used. The analysis was conducted to determine the influence of massive second-hand cars imports from Europe on NO2 emissions from traffic as a result of the waiver of the environmental tax.
