The CO2 removal from N2 using unconventional techniques based on different (various) membranes has known a significant interest in industry. Mixed matrix membranes combine the advantages of organic (easily processable and low cost) and inorganic phases (high selectivity, mechanical resistance, chemical and thermal stability).
In this study, membranes with polysulfone matrix and MCM-41 (silica) as filler were obtained, characterized and tested. The mixed matrix membranes were prepared by casting method. The effects of MCM-41 loading (0-32 wt.%) on the membrane characteristics were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TGA), while the gas transport properties were investigated by single gas permeation measurements with CO2 and N2. The TGA analysis confirmed that the membranes are appropriate for operating at high-temperature conditions, the complete degradation of polymeric chain being achieved after 650°C. The particle agglomerations were more visible in SEM images, with the increase of filler content, conducting to a dramatically decrease of selectivity from 36.72 for 16wt.% MCM-41/PSF to 25.41 for 32wt.% MCM-41/PSF.
The permeability of the mixed matrix membranes with 32 wt.% MCM-41 increased up to 400% for CO2, comparing with the neat polymer.
