During the last decades, scientists have confirmed that global climate change is a result of human activities, aspects emphasized by long-term observation on different climate elements. Rural people, who make up approximately 40% of the global population, are generally more vulnerable to the adverse consequences of climate change. Despite the growing knowledge base on climate change and its impacts, much remains to be understood about the linkages between climate change and rural development.
Climate change affects entire communities and community-based strategies are essential to improve adaptive capacity through a complex and multi-dimensional process. Thus, rural development must consider the various aspects of climate change in order to reduce socio-economic losses due to climate variability and to protect development gains from the effects of climate change.
Given the complexity of finding the most sustainable measures which should be harmoniously included in an effective climate change adaptation plan, this paper will focus only on some key aspects which are indispensable in achieving a resilient rural area.
